First week of school

School started yesterday and so far is going well. I love my new studio--got it mostly set up today.

I've worked more on two of the relief sketches.

Summer Work

I've been exploring some new ideas this summer.

First, here's a portrait done during the Spring semester, learning about forensics. We started with a 3D scan of the model's skull. We applied the clay on top of the skull (cast in plaster) and learned about the average depths from skull to skin in different races and for male and female.

Here is a relief of a waterfall. I was thinking of the kind of nature I saw in Japan, and how there is a flow to their art such as in calligraphy and ink paintings. This flow is also maintained in social relations.

Next is a direct plaster sculpture I have been working on. I might refine it a little more, but plan to leave it fairly rough.

Finally, here are some small studies for a series of large reliefs I want to create. They are about the body as landscape. Though the connections might not be visually evident yet in these studies, I am looking at surrealism (mainly Dali) and Japanese ink landscape paintings, as well as Renaissance reliefs such as Ghiberti's bronze doors for inspiration as well as technique.

Or with a few photoshop modifications:

I've played around with the composition of this one in photoshop as well:

This next month I am traveling a bit, which may limit me to watercolors, but I'll be sure to post anything new once I am back and settled at home again.

Till then,
Lisa Robin

Wrapping up the First Semester

It's hard to believe I'm 1/4 through my education at NYAA. It's been a great semester.

Towards the end of the semester, our school held the Deck the Walls event, where the main gallery was covered in student, faculty and alumni artwork, all less than 14" large. There were also male models posing with angel wings and some of the students were painting them. The work on the walls and the "angel" paintings were all for sale the benefit the school. I met a local artist who does nude and travel photographs ( and who was buying some art. He posted a picture of me and pictures of the event on his blog.

Here is my final drawing for Drawing I class.

And here are some views of my final sculpture for Composition and Design.

And a picture of me talking about my piece in the final critique.

Here is a piece being molded in a mold-making workshop the school held for us.

And here is a clay sketch I did mid-semester.

That's all for now. The semester starts again soon and hopefully I'll have some more images for you all soon.

First Semester at New York Academy

I've been enjoying my first semester at NYAA. Here is a picture of my studio.

Here are some new works. This is a study for a larger project for my Composition and Design Class. I haven't taken any photos from my figure sculpture class yet but will have to do that soon.

This is an unfinished self-portrait.

This is a 3-hour portrait study from drawing class.

And last but not least, the start of my anatomical man before we've put many muscles on--we are learning anatomy in a more geometric sense and next semester we will get more into specific muscles.

Well, my time with the model is done. If I need to do anything else I'll be using photographs and memory.
